The Cypress in Central Texas has for decades been misidentified as "just a different kind of" Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) as one might find in East Texas and Louisiana. Taxodium distichum, however, has larger cones, forms extensive root "knees " and grows in swamps. The Central Texas Cypress that one can find around San Antonio, Uvalde, Austin and the hill country however, rarely forms knees, has much smaller cones, and a broader, stouter habit.
