Fluid behind eardrum, known medically as otitis media with effusion (OME), is the accumulation of fluid, often in the middle of the ear, with no sign or other symptoms of an ear infection. This can occur in one or both ears, and can sometimes last for prolonged periods of time, although this is more often the case in adults than in children.

Sinus Infections. Sinus infections, or sinusitis, can also cause ear pain. The sinuses are located near the ears, and when they become inflamed due to infection, it can create pressure that radiates to the ears. This pressure can lead to a dull ache or fullness in the ear, making it feel like an ear problem.

In its early stages, ear pain can be managed using over-the-counter pain medications. If the infection has progressed far enough to require surgery, prescription medications, such as Percocet, may be necessary. Keep your upper body elevated and use an ice pack to reduce pain and swelling.
