The earthquake followed a pair of smaller earthquakes in the Inland Empire. At 8:34 a.m., a 3.0 magnitude earthquake hit about 3 miles northwest of Rialto, and at 8:42 a.m., a 2.8magnitude earthquake also hit about 3 miles northwest of Rialto.
