The father of NYPD Det. Didarul Islam, who was killed in last week's Midtown Manhattan office shooting spoke out Tuesday for the first time since his son's death.

In 122 words, slain Officer Didarul Islam in an essay made it clear why he wanted to join the NYPD: they were there to protect New Yorkers and, he said, “I got inspired by their work.” Islam was one of four people shot dead by Shane Tamura at a Park Ave.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Officer Islam, who was killed in Monday’s massacre, had been posthumously promoted to detective first grade. Mayor Eric Adams was among the other speakers at a service held at a mosque in the Bronx.
