Richard Perry, a record producer who helped craft hits in the 1970s and '80s, such as Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," died Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The onetime drummer, oboist and doo-wop singer became the rare producer to have No. 1 hits on the pop, R&B, dance and country charts.
