When fire maps showed a bushfire in Tasmania's west burning within metres of a high-conservation-value stand of ancient trees, there were fears for the worst.

Follow wildfire updates in North and South Carolina, where blazes erupted over the weekend. The largest stemmed from a forest fire near Myrtle Beach.

Bushfires in Tasmania's west have burnt through more than 93,000 hectares. Crews are currently focusing on the three major fires in the Canning Peak, Mount Donaldson and Yellowband Plain areas.
