The ID3 is a key launch for VW in Europe because it's the first of a new generation of affordable, long-range electric cars based on its MEB architecture.

Volkswagen didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The researchers who investigated the flaws in remote key fobs aren't strangers to VW security issues.

Volkswagen is working with Trustonic to enable customers to use smartphones to access their vehicles, and to securely share their digital car keys.
