A Github repository is basically a folder designed to store files. It is also available online for anyone to download, access, and contribute to the files/code within the folder.

GitHub is rolling out support for the free scanning of exposed secrets (such as credentials and auth tokens) to all public repositories on its code hosting platform.

GitHub has announced it will be bringing its secret scanning capability to more users in a bid to help public repository admins detect leaked secrets in their repositories before a breach happens.

What it is known is that the hacker removes all source code and recent commits from vitcims' Git repositories, and leaves a ransom note behind that asks for a payment of 0.1 Bitcoin (~$570).
