The State Board of Education was set to vote Monday on whether the English and Language Arts textbooks provided by Texas will feature stories from the Bible. In September, the SBOE listened to hours of testimony from parents and groups who both supported and opposed the curriculum.

Officials in Texas are set to vote Tuesday on a new public school curriculum that incorporates lessons from the Bible as early as kindergarten, that provoked criticism from advocacy groups and families across the state.

Texas public schools could use teachings from the Bible in lessons as an option for students from kindergarten through fifth grade under a proposal before the state board of education

Kindergartens would learn about Jesus and his Sermon on the Mount while fifth-grade include the Gospel of Matthew.

The Board heard from more than 150 people about the new proposed curriculum during more than 8 hours of testimony.

If the proposed curriculum passes, school districts in Texas will not be forced to use it, but there will be an incentive of $60 in state funding per student for adopting the new curriculum.
