Toyota has confirmed that new Toyota cars won't include remote starting from their key fobs — you'll have to use the mobile app.
The potential data breach was uncovered after it was found that an access key to Toyota T-Connect, the official Toyota connectivity app, was left publicly available on GitHub for the last five years.
But this is a physical key fob that needs to communicate directly with the vehicle via radio frequency—no remote connection back to Toyota is needed. So why require a subscription?
According to a report in The Drive, Toyota models 2018 or newer will need a subscription in order for the key fob to support remote start functionality.
