A milelong stretch of protected bikeway opens this weekend on the waterfront, giving bicyclists a new way to see and move through the city.

Seattle celebrated the opening of a new 1.2-mile protected bike lane along the city's waterfront Saturday morning.

SEATTLE - The Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects is set to celebrate the opening of new protected bike lanes along Waterfront Park on Saturday, March 8. The 1.2-mile-long bike path, which connects Pioneer Square and Belltown, is part of the city's vision for a greener, more connected urban environment.

The 1.2-mile bike lane restores a connection along the central waterfront that hasn't existed in years, and is sure to turn into one of the city's most highly-used bike facilities.

The covered lanes will stretch 1.2 miles and connect Pioneer Square and Belltown, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation.
