The New Mexico Open awarded a $100,000 purse to contestants, the largest in its history and among the 10 largest of all PGA sectional tournaments. Thomas was given $20,000 of the $100,000 for winning.

With the win, Block receives an exemption into the PGA Tour’s American Express tournament in La Quinta in January, a tournament he has played five times. By clinching section player of the year honors for the second straight year. Geddes earns a berth in the PGA Tour’s Farmers insurance Open in San Diego the week after the American Express.

The PGA Tour has started nearly every year on the Plantation course at Kapalua since 1999, but drought conditions in Maui have changed that.

The loss of the golf tournament is an economic blow to a West Maui tourism industry that has suffered since wildfires killed 102 people and destroyed much of the historic town of Lahaina in August 2023. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority reported 235,529 visitors to Maui this past July, 20.7% fewer than visited Maui in July 2023, before the fires.
