Most of the Japanese magnolias we grow are the result of a cross between two Chinese species, Magnolia liliiflora (lily magnolia) and Magnolia denudata (white saucer or Yulan magnolia).

Most Japanese magnolia varieties are relatively small trees, growing slowly to only 25 to 30 feet high by 20 feet wide. They are multitrunked unless trained to one major trunk.

It's a popular tree in Jacksonville, the Japanese magnolia or saucer magnolia. The relatively large flowers have been sitting as green-pointed buds all winter and are starting to emerge now.

Unlike the native Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), the Japanese magnolia is deciduous and drops its leaves in winter.
