While there are technically 14 different versions of Minecraft, almost everyone is playing either Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

Minecraft Java Edition players can only cross-play with people on the same version, which is relegated to PC, Mac, and Linux.

Microsoft explains more: "The Bedrock Edition of Minecraft is available on consoles, mobile devices, and computers running Windows. Cross-platform play is supported with other Bedrock players.

Microsoft's official announcement post also references cross-play, which would seem to imply that Java and Bedrock Edition players will finally be able to play together.
