Last month Dartmouth researchers discovered the most complete ancient agricultural site so far in the eastern half of the U.S., along the Menominee River just across the Wisconsin border.
For years, the Menominee Nation has fought against mining at the site. Canada-based Aquila Resources had hoped to start its Back 40 Mine, which would extract gold, silver, zinc and copper.
It includes about 3,200 acres. The Menominee tribe, which is based in Keshena, Wisconsin, did not respond to media inquiries about the application’s required revision last week.
