Virtua Fighter may soon be punching its way back into the public eye. Justin Scarpone, Sega's global head of transmedia, casually dropped the news about a new game in the franchise during an interview with VGC.

A new Virtua fighter game appears to be in the works after apparent confirmation from Sega itself. In an interview with VGC, Justin Scarpone, Sega’s new global head of transmedia, dropped the potentially explosive news as part of a discussion about the various legacy titles the company is bringing back with new versions.

Sega confirms the development of a new Virtua Fighter game, joining other legacy revivals like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.

"We have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.

Sega is working on a new Virtua Fighter game for the first time since 2006, giving the first-ever fighting game series a chance to retrieve some of its original sparkle.

A Sega official confirms that a new Virtua Fighter game is in development 18 years after the release of its last main-series entry.

Assuming the new game is not a reboot or remake, the new Virtua Fighter would be the sixth entry in the fighting franchise, which ushered in a new era of 3D-based fighters when it debuted in 1993. The most recent game, Virtua Fighter 5, first launched for home consoles in 2007 before being remastered in 2021.

Surprisingly the Japanese company has a new fighter in production but other than its existence that's all we know.

SEGA is on a charm offensive. The legendary Japanese publisher, which has launched some of the best games of 2024, is reviving an array of favourites – including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage.
