In a federal lawsuit filed last week, Publix was accused of inflating the weights of products at checkout. Here's what to know.

A woman says in a federal lawsuit that she discovered a number of deceptive pricing practices at five Tampa Publix stores.

“When a price reduction is advertised for one of the products, instead of charging the reduced sale price multiplied by the weight of the product,” the lawsuit claims, “Publix’s point of sale checkout system automatically increases the weight of the product, so that the consumer does not receive the sale price.”

The lawsuit claims the scales at self-checkout falsely add weight and the store leaves expired sale signs up in the hope that customers will buy the products.
